Betty White may be about to turn 100 years old, but her age certainly hasn’t deterred one of her A-list suitors, she says.
Although it’s been over a decade since the legendary comedian starred alongside Ryan Reynolds in The Proposal, she joked that he’s still crushing on her to this day. “I’ve heard Ryan can’t get over his thing for me,” White told People in an interview released this week.
Unfortunately for Reynolds, “Robert Redford is The One,” she added.
Since White played Reynolds’ on-screen grandmother, he has often referred to her in interviews as his “ex-girlfriend,” even writing in a 2019 birthday tribute to her on Instagram, “I don’t usually wish ex-girlfriends Happy Birthday. But Betty’s special.” The Deadpool star also spoke fondly of White for the cover story ahead of her 100th birthday next month, confessing that he has been a fan of hers “for as long as I can remember.” He added, “I heard that scripts for Golden Girls were only 35 pages, which makes sense because so many of the laughs come from Betty simply looking at her castmates.” Reynolds joked that the actress is “a typical Capricorn. Sleeps all day. Out all night boozing and snacking on men.”
White and Reynolds’ other co-star in The Proposal, Sandra Bullock, also had nothing but praise for the Golden Girls star and her comedic chops. “Timing isn’t easy in comedy because you have to navigate other people’s timing. Betty pivots like I have never seen, making it look seamless. The rest of us just remain silent and pray we’re not cut out of the scene,” she said. Bullock added that she hopes White will celebrate her birthday “the same way she has celebrated every day of her life—with humor, kindness, and a vodka on ice, toasting to the fact that she’s a badass who has left us all in the dust.”
While she may be a badass, White has been keeping it pretty low-key lately, doing crossword puzzles and watching animal documentaries at her home in Los Angeles. “I’m so lucky to be in such good health and feel so good at this age. It’s amazing,” she said. She also shared one of her secrets to longevity with People. “I try to avoid anything green,” she explained. “I think it’s working.”
